I am the Graduate Assistant for the New Student Program at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX. In this role, I oversee and plan events for our new students, primarily first-year students. The New Student Programs (NSP) includes a small break room that we call "The Landing." This space provides students with a place to relax, grab a bite to eat, study, or simply hang out with fellow students. As a small private university, we rely on donations and private funding; unfortunately, our department receives very little support. My goal is to ensure that students stay in school, and I have found that fostering a sense of community through food and activities that students enjoy is an effective way to achieve that.
