Satrang SoCal
Founded in 1997, Satrang is a volunteer-run 501c(3) nonprofit serving the LGBTQIA+ South Asian community in Southern California for over 26 years. Our mission is to promote awareness, acceptance, and empowerment through social, educational, and advocacy-related events. We envision an inclusive and visible community in which South Asian LGBTQ-identified people feel whole and heard. We host a variety of events, including drag shows, film screenings, healing/processing spaces, an annual Iftar dinner for queer Muslims during Ramadan, coffee/chai meetups, and an annual Family Day picnic. Satrang has been included in publications such as the LA Times, and our events in 2024 served over 400 participants. We have received grants such as the San Diego Pride Foundation grant, and have been a community partner for West Hollywood Pride for the past two years.
Our goals at Satrang are:
- To provide a safe space where queer South Asians can connect to and celebrate both their LGBTQIA+ and South Asian identities, and be affirmed in any other intersecting identities they may hold.
- To provide a space for queer South Asians to find community and form many kinds of connections, including friendships and chosen family, creative/business partnerships and collaborations, romantic connections etc.
- To uplift and generously compensate queer South Asian creatives, who have historically been under-compensated for their labor, while also increasing representation of queer South Asian artists.
Our all-volunteer board is comprised of artists, activists, educators, and community leaders who dedicate their time towards upholding this mission.
